M4 Junctions 12 to 13: Bridge Refurbishment – Weekend Closure Reminder

This is a reminder that the M4 east and westbound carriageways will be closed between junctions 12 (Theale) and 13 (Chieveley) this weekend as part of a scheme to replace the beams and waterproofing material to the bridges which carry the M4 over the B4009 Hampstead Norreys Road near Hermitage, Brocks Lane near Frilsham and Burnt Hill Road.

The M4 will be fully closed from 10pm tomorrow (Friday 8 December) through to 6am on Monday (11 December).

The closure is required to allow space for the large cranes and low-loader lorries to sit across the carriageway (as demonstrated in the attached photos taken during the last weekend closure).

During the closures a clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A4 (through Newbury, Thatcham and Woolhampton), however as we are expecting this route to be extremely busy alternatives routes will be suggested further afield.  Significant delays are expected during these weekend closure periods, and it is advised that you plan ahead of your journey to allow for extra time or avoid this route where possible.

Should the new beams be lifted into position successfully over this weekend, then the further planned weekend closure in December and the two planned in January will be cancelled.  An email will be sent next week to confirm if the next weekend closure is required.

We would like to apologise in advance for any disruption caused by these closures; if you have any questions, or if you’d like you know about our work please contact us on 0300 123 5000 or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
